How to paint a wall

1

Tape perimeter of the wall (optional if you are confident).

2

Cut in edges of the wall*.

3

With a loaded roller on an extension pole, start from the middle, rolling in a straight up-down motion, having the paint just touching the area you previously cut in.

4

Lay off** before moving onto next area.

5

After the first roller width, roll a bit away and roll paint towards already painted section overlapping the sections to ensure a smooth finish.

*For novices who need extra guidance and precision, try using an angled brush (link to ‘how to cut in’).

**To lay off, in one motion starting from the bottom or top, gently glide your roller up and down the surface of the paint to smooth out any harsh lines.

How to cut in

1

Soak paint brush for 10 minutes in an inch of water (water-based paint) or turpentine (oil-based paint).

2

Load you brush by dipping the end one third of the way. Tap on the side of paint pot to remove excess paint (do not wipe! This will remove too much paint).

3

Paint a line 40-50cm long, away from the edge first. This will help unload some paint.

4

Angle your brush on a 45-degree angle with the tip pointed towards the edge and carefully cut in, no need to put extreme pressure down on the brush when cutting in.

5

Using the flat side of the brush, evenly spread remaining paint.

TIP:

For beginners who need extra guidance and more precision, consider using an angled brush.
